Anxiety In Schools

Presentations for Students
Length: typically 1 hour

This presentation is designed to help students understand the difference between teenage angst and an anxiety disorder.

The goal is to help students understand how avoidance coping is not helpful and may even maintain anxiety over time. We talk about the use of electronic devices in the role of anxiety, guilt, and shame. We also help teens understand how to better communicate with their parents and engage in healthy behaviors.

Presentations for Parents
Length: typically 1.5 hours

This is a very similar to the presentation for students but adjusted for parents. In addition to the information covered in the student presentation, we focus on teaching parents to help their children, identify signs of anxiety in kids, and manage expectations at home. We discuss the very important role of empathy and the avoidance of over-accommodating anxiety in kids.

Presentations for Faculty and Staff
Length: a 1-hour presentation or 3-hour in-service program

This presentation is designed to educate faculty on the difference between stress and anxiety and how anxiety manifests in children in schools. We also help the staff understand what can be helpful for kids with anxiety and identify effective accommodations. Finally, we discuss managing parents of anxious children.

The 3-hour in-service program goes more in-depth with interactive activities to help facilitate discussion and empathize points.

Community Outreach

Hoarding
Length: typically 1.5 hours
We work with mental health partners and non-profit groups to address the prevalence and impact of hoarding on our communities through a mental health lens. These trainings provide ways to conceptualize hoarding, recognize the difference between collecting and hoarding, and provide guidance for working with individuals with lived experience of hoarding.

We offer similar trainings to caseworkers and partners who may encounter hoarding when working with a family through DHS services. Interventions in this training are tailored to the caseworker’s scope of practice.

Hoarding can affect many aspects of our community. We partner with representatives with expertise in the housing authority realm to co-present, so attendees receive information on both the mental health perspective (from us) and the housing/legal perspective.

Corporate Workshops

Length: typically 1.5 - 5  hours

Studies show the happier and healthier your employees, the better the productivity, the higher the quality of work, and the lower the health care costs. Chances are a good portion of your employees are struggling with anxiety, depression, substance abuse, and parenting conflicts in their daily lives. This workshop focuses on how anxiety impacts individuals and therefore, their performance, work quality, and productivity. We’ll give an overview training on anxiety, parenting, and self-care.

"When Kevin presented to the parents, his style was incredibly engaging.  What impressed me the most was his ability to, not only speak in a very organized and relatable way, but how much time he left to answer questions."
– Carolyn Ullman, The Madeleine School, Portland, OR

“Kevin approached the difficult subject of teen anxiety and depression with empathy, humor, and, most importantly of all, an understanding of what educators face on a day-to-day basis. His presentation was down to earth and accessible to our entire faculty and staff. We participated in some truly engaging and informative activities that challenged many of our preconceived notions about teenage anxiety and left us with concrete strategies for the future. I highly recommend Kevin’s services, particularly for educators struggling to make sense of the large, difficult, and important topic  of adolescent mental health.”

-Valley Catholic High School
“Allison joined our staff meeting and presented an excellent training on hoarding and what we as in-home parenting consultants, can do to assist. Allison was so clear and informative and she immediately made connections with her friendly and warm presence. The quality of her presentation was so appreciated and I’ve heard from many who subsequently implemented new strategies in this work."
