Wellness Class Instructor
Kathleen brings a spirit of compassion and creativity in her role as the Creative Writing & Expression class instructor, offered as part of NWAI’s IOP Focus Program. She sees her purpose as inspiring others (especially young people) to use their powers of imagination to take on fear and anxiety. She actively works with community members to shake off the “mental disorder” label attached to anxiety, and align instead with all of the many artists, writers, and inventors who have used their anxious minds as fuel for creativity.
Kathleen has worn many hats over the years, including Teacher, Creator, Director, Writer, and Non-profit Business Owner. She recently developed a creative workshop and website, Create More, Fear Less, inspired by her own personal experience with anxiety and experiences shared with her by middle-school students who read her novel, The Best Worst Thing (2016, Little, Brown). For the novel, she was awarded 2017 Oregon Book Award finalist. Additionally, she has been published in Los Angeles Review, Berkeley Fiction Review, Baltimore Review, Writer’s Digest, Swink Magazine, Forest Avenue Press and elsewhere.
In her spare time, she loves biking with her family, showing her Portland pride by watching the Timbers, doing yoga, dancing, writing, and playing futsal.
"We are here to help each other get through this thing, whatever it is."
