What
Buried In Treasures (BIT) Workshop
For Teens

Most of us think of hoarding behaviors as occurring among adults, but did you know the average person with Hoarding Disorder (HD) begins to experience hoarding behaviors in their teen years?

Hoarding symptoms begin to appear early in life and continue throughout the entire lifespan, increasing in severity with each passing decade if untreated:
  • Ages 11–15 — symptoms may first emerge
  • By the mid-20’s — symptoms begin interfering with every day functioning
  • By the mid-30’s — symptoms cause significant impairment and the person is likely to meet full criteria for a diagnosis of HD

NWAI clinicians, Jessica McKee, LPC, and Ashley Wray, LCSW, have partnered to adapt the well-known and widely researched curriculum, Buried in Treasures, creating a teens-only workshop.
  • 16-week program that involves peer support as well as resources and support for parents
  • Each weekly session follows the BIT curriculum, focusing on a chapter in the book, Buried in Treasures: Help For Compulsive Acquiring, Saving, And Hoarding (Treatments That Work)
  • All participants receive a copy of the book, practical tools for addressing hoarding behaviors, and peer support in implementing new techniques
